Healing doesn’t mean the injury, trauma, accident never happened or that the pain and suffering has ended. It mean’s we are no longer allowing it to control our life.
Two and a half years ago I lost the use of my left leg for six months due to a knee injury. It robbed me of the ability to do things that support a physical and mental healthy life. Needless to say, I was pissed. In addition, surgery did not go as planned. I woke up in a cast from my hip down to my toes and the recovery plan went from a two-week process to a full year. After a year of physical therapy, I finally gained use of my leg back, but the pain still exists.
Even though I have healed, the scares still show. How I use my leg now is definitely different than it was prior to my injury. What I have gained is an appreciation for having leg that I can use without extreme pain. The pain now does not prevent me from the inability to support the physical and mental healthy life I need to function in this life.
The same concept can be applied to emotional healing. We often think that when we have healed from a trauma or a loss, that we will never feel what had felt in that moment ever again. But you will! When you have healed from emotional injury, you are not allowing those emotions to control your life. Healing is not asking you to forget your emotions. It’s not asking you to erase the memories. Those emotional scares will always be there. To heal is give yourself the strength and ability to not allow the emotional injury to stop you from living life. Healing is not a cure, but a journey to get back on track in a different way and to grow.
Set yourself up for healing with the expectation you will become strong again by not allowing the emotions to be in control of your life, but YOU be in control.
